Interview with Kortney Wilson

We sat down with one of our fave brand ambassadors to chat about all things life, style and design. Kortney has been a contributor to My Brick Home in the past and we love to share her expertise with you.

1.

How do you find you design inspiration?
You can truly find it anywhere! I came from a world of song writing and we get our inspiration from life. I find that really translates in design.

2.

Any interior design secrets you can share?
I think a lot of people love the look of mixing and matching patterns but they don’t know how to put it together. There really is only one trick. Don’t mix patterns of the same scale. The scale has to be different enough that it is very noticeable.

3.

What is your favourite room in your house?
Right now, my favourite is my bathroom. I think it’s because I shifted the way the room flows by putting an ottoman in the centre of the space. I did it by accident! I was actually building out a wall to put a fireplace. And when I did that, I moved the ottoman out of the way, into the centre so that I could paint. And that singlehandedly transformed the room. You never know what works!

4.

Tips for ‘jeujing’ up a room?
There are several! One is group everything on shelves in threes, or at least in odd numbers, of different shapes and sizes. For example, you wouldn’t put three vases that are exactly the same together. You would do one big vase, one smaller and wider vase and maybe a candle. Another thing – you need greenery. If you don’t have greenery in every single room, you didn’t jeuge it up properly! Don’t fret!

5.

Designing a space can be overwhelming...where do you like to start?
I like to start by de-cluttering. Take every single thing you don’t like, out of the house. If you’re like “oh my gosh somebody bought this for me and I just feel guilty”… get rid of the guilt! After, start bringing in your major pieces. For example, a living room – start by framing out the sofa across from the focal point. And then layer on the accessories.
